The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
