New York's next mayor affirms his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central issue, was not quick to announce this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.
"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
