Forest striker in action
Igor Jesus has now scored 11 goals in all competitions for Nottingham Forest this campaign.

At a Glance

  • Forest were already through to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender own goal gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • The striker's fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in control.
  • Forward adds a third with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • James McAtee rounds off a great performance with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side concluded the league phase of the Europa League with a comfortable win against their Hungarian visitors at the City Ground.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a berth in the next qualifying round and went into this game with a slim possibility of reaching the top eight, although they required other matches to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this assured display will give the supporters belief that their side can navigate the home-and-away tie to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the upright with a headed effort inside the opening stages for the away team – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from that point forward.

They opened the scoring in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was deflected in by the defender and added a second four minutes later – the striker firing an effort in at the back post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

Jesus' 11th arrived soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to break clear of the defence and then drive an effort beyond the goalkeeper.

The third strike killed off the visitors' aspirations of making a comeback and instead the hosts scored again when the impressive McAtee converted a spot-kick after a foul by the hapless Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

Europe's secondary club competition knockout phase play-off draw takes place on Friday, 30 January (12:00 GMT), where Nottingham Forest might face either Fenerbahce or the Greek club.

"It's more than the result, there was that feel about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the whole squad," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"This is another stride forward, but it is a positive step."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Watches On

Jesus has been a standout performer for Nottingham Forest in European competition this term with half of his 11 goals coming in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has got three goals in his last two games and the prospect of a challenge for his place in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this game from the directors' box.

That may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, producing two excellent finishes and generally being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his speed and runs.

The forward was not the only one in catching the eye, with McAtee turning in his best performance in a Forest jersey since signing from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while Dan Ndoye also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the Premier League relegation zone when they host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a response," continued the manager.

"I've never questioned their commitment or their dedication or integrity. It is just about displaying your ability.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan was super sharp. Jesus got another couple and these are positive indicators."
