The British tennis star achieved the biggest win of his career by rebounding from a set down to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had previously defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win marks Norrie's initial success over a current world top-ranked player.

"Huge. Extremely important for me," stated Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in history to defeat a world No 1. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I fell in the first round of qualies here. I just aimed to embrace my game in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the greatest win of my career, my maiden triumph over the top player and likely the most confident competitor in the sport right now."

Norrie, positioned No 31, also halted Alcaraz's dominant streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive elite tournament victories, which represented the best series of performances in the young champion's early career.

Contest Analysis

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently to a win early on as he sailed through the opening set. Yet, the British contender slowly worked himself into contention by executing with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into prolonged, grueling points. His persistent shot tolerance and dependability steadily took its toll.

For much of the match, Alcaraz served well but he struggled badly to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old seemed notably uneasy striking his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for most of this season, committing 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 mistakes. Across the net, the British player gave his opponent minimal unforced errors, sustaining his consistency, physicality and penetration all match while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to force himself inside the baseline and attack well.

Alcaraz, despite his extraordinary success, is has not yet master how to deliver his finest performance indoors.
