British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
