Administration officials confirmed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
